Forming Quality and Fatigue Behavior of Self‐Piercing Riveted Joints of DP590 and AA6061 Plates

Abstract: Two kinds of self-piercing riveted (SPR) joints were prepared with DP590 and AA6061 plates. The forming qualities of the joints were studied using the finite element method. The relationships between the fatigue life and failure forms of the joints with different upper plates were discussed. Finally, the failure mechanisms of the joints were analyzed. The results show that the maximum static tension of DA32 joints (with an upper plate of DP590) is significantly greater than that of the other kind, and the fati… Show more

“…According to the research of scholars, as well as the authors’ previous works, riveting parameters, such as sheet thickness and sheet lap sequence, have great influence on the performance of self-piercing riveting joints [ 23 , 24 , 25 ]. When different metal plates are connected, the more plastic plates should be placed on the lower layer; at the same time, the rivet height should not exceed the total thickness of the plate by 3 mm.…”

“…With the development of automobile lightweight technology, the mixing of steel/aluminum and other multi-materials for the automobile body structures has already been the unavoidable tendency of automobile design technology development [4,5]. Because of the advantages of no heat input and noise pollution, and easy realization of the heterogeneous material connection, self-piercing riveting is widely used in the connection of automobile hybrid body structures [6][7][8]. The body of the domestic automobile may be subjected to various types of external loads during its service life, and it is necessary to study the mechanics of the SPR joints at different operating conditions, especially the impact destructions suffered by the SPR joints.…”

“…Compared with conventional bolt-nut connection processes, self-piercing riveting (SPR) has the special advantages of no predrilling, fast forming speed, reliable connection, and high fatigue strength [9]. Therefore, the SPR is broadly used in the connections of different materials, especially for the connections between ultra-high-strength steel and aluminum alloys [10,11].…”
