Former Very Preterm Infants Show Alterations in Thyroid Function at a Preschool Age

Abstract: Preterm birth is frequently associated with altered thyroid hormone levels in the newborn period. Recent data suggest a role of prematurity independent of birth size also in childhood thyroid dysfunction. Whether the high-risk population of former very preterm infants (VPI) is particularly susceptible to thyroid hormone alterations is currently unknown. The aim of the present study was to assess whether former VPI display changes in thyroid hormone status in comparison to term-born controls at a preschool age.… Show more

“…The neurologic disorders comprise diseases like autism spectrum disorders, depression, and anxiety which are frequently observed in former preterm infants and restrict their quality of life beyond intelligence and gross and fine motor functions [ 111 , 112 ]. Even persisting hormonal dysregulations in former preterms are coming into the focus of research [ 113 ]. Underlining the functional relevance of the gut-brain axis to the neurodevelopmental outcome after prematurity, higher and persisting prevalence of Bifidobacteria in the gut microbiome is associated with improved scores for mental development at 24 months [ 114 ].…”

“…pituitary-thyroid axis, as demonstrated in rat [46,47]. In human, maternal smoking and high maternal BMI were associated with disturbed fetal thyroid gland development and endocrine functionin the second trimester of pregnancy [48] and alterations in thyroid hormone function in former very preterm infants at preschool age were documented [49]. It is hypothetical whether these structural and functional alterations are contributing to the development of chronic disease in later life.…”
