Formative assessment: a key to deep learning?

Abstract: A paradigm shift in assessment culture has emphasized the importance of formative assessment. The existing evidence supports the identification of feedback as the central component of formative assessment. Feedback provides information about the existing gap between the actual and desired levels of performance. The existing evidence suggests various characteristics of effective feedback, for example, ensuring that feedback is construct-referenced and student referenced. An exploration of the existing education… Show more

“…1 Feedback is only effective when the trainee takes action to narrow the gaps identified. 13 The evaluation of the WBA pilot from the JRCPTB supported this finding and, in fact, in the JRCPTB study only a minority of feedback included any action plan (recurring theme reported by 15 of 76 trainees).…”

“…A problem with oral feedback is that although the students value it, they do not necessarily recognize it or remember having received it, so that establishing a clear frame for the feedback is recommended (Dobbie & Tysinger 2005;Bienstock et al 2007). Educational literature emphasizes the importance of individualized feedback which integrates the student's self-evaluation (Rushton 2005). The StudentPEP project ( Figure 1) provided triangulation of written feedback from patients and teachers combined with students' selfassessment (Braend et al 2010).…”

“…The literature indicates clearly that frequent testing with feedback improves learning (e.g., [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [3], [14]. Frequent testing with feedback increases retention by helping learners recognize, understand, and remember the most essential elements of instruction.…”
