“…The pre-heating is needed for the fabrication of porous NiTi SMAs by SHS because of the relatively low exothermic character between titanium and nickel reactants [11]. The SHS parameters and porosity of porous NiTi SMAs are shown in Table 1.…”

“…Typical scheme of a self-propagating reaction in multilayer systems Self-propagating exothermic reactions have been observed in a variety of compacted powders, e.g. Ni/Ti or Ti/Co [11], and nano structured multilayer systems, such as Ni/Al [10]. The properties of the powder-based self-propagating reactions depend strongly on the particle size, shape, processing, and purity as described in different reviews [12].…”

“…The pre-heating is needed for the combustion synthesis of porous NiTi shape memory alloy because of the relatively low exothermic character of the reactions between titanium and nickel [15]. The combustion temperature recorded by the thermocouple in this work is up to 1310 • C and much higher than that obtained by Li and co-workers (1089 • C) [10,11] at the same pre-heating temperature of 350 • C. This may be due to the following two reasons: firstly, the ignition technique in this work has been improved by using a special ignition reagent composed of Ti and C powders instead of the tungsten coil as the ignitor to ignite the reactant mixture directly.…”
