“…Besides representing a novel potato breeding scheme based on biotechnology methods, the studies produced a lot of fundamental, new information about the somatic, cytogenetic and sexual compatibility of distantly related Solanum species and utility of the disease resistance traits expressed by them. It was also found that the somatic hybrids of potato and S. brevidens synthesize a novel glycoalkaloid that was not found in the parental genotypes (Laurila et al 1996).
