Formation of Integral Asymmetric Membranes of AB Diblock and ABC Triblock Copolymers by Phase Inversion

Abstract: The formation of integral asymmetric membranes from ABC triblock terpolymers by non-solvent-induced phase separation is shown. They are compared with the AB diblock copolymer precursors. Triblock terpolymers of polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO) with two compositions are investigated. The third block supports the formation of a membrane in a case, where the corresponding diblock copolymer does not form a good membrane. In addition, the hydrophilicity is increas… Show more

“…The addition of a short third block was also reported to support the structure formation and to enable a significant increase of the process window . A short poly(ethylene oxide) block (PEO) enhanced the formation of an integral asymmetric polystyrene‐ block ‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine)‐ block ‐poly(ethylene oxide) triblock terpolymer membrane compared to the membrane obtained from the PS‐ b ‐P2VP precursor diblock copolymer.…”

“…Additionally, post-modification of this type of membrane was done and led to superior properties, such as double stimuli-responsivity [15]. This concept was further extended to not only diblock copolymers, but also triblock terpolymers for the fabrication of integral asymmetric membrane via self-assembly SNIPS [16,17]. Blending of block copolymers was shown to be a facile way to tune the pore size of isoporous membranes [18].…”

“…Asymmetric polymer membranes are composed of a dense top layer that selectively separates molecules and a porous bottom layer that offers mechanical strength . Asymmetric polymer membranes allow for the separation of small molecules based on chemical affinity for various applications such as pharmaceutical purification, kidney dialysis, and water desalination .…”
