Formation of Icosahedral Clusters and Spin Freezing in RE(Fe1-<i>x</i>Al<i>x</i>)13 Amorphous Alloys

Abstract: The formation of icosahedral clusters in RE(Fe 1Àx Al x ) 13 (RE: La, Y, Ce and Lu) amorphous alloys have systematically been investigated. The spin-glass behavior and the magnetic phase diagrams are closely related with the interatomic distance of Fe-Fe pair in the icosahedral clusters formed in the amorphous phases. The existence of icosahedral clusters in the RE(Fe 1Àx Al x ) 13 amorphous alloys was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, although the formation in the crystalline state restricts to only RE = La. “…With increasing Fe concentration, the Curie temperature (T C ) decreases and a re-entrant spin glass type magnetic state appears. According to structural studies [16,17], the nearest neighbor Fe-Fe distance in amorphous La(Fe 0.85 Al 0.15 ) 13 alloy is 0.255 nm, which is very close to that of Fe-Ni Invar alloy.…”
