Formation of gold colloids using thioether derivatives as stabilizing ligands

Abstract: Thioethers were used as adsorbates for preparing gold nanoparticles. Different thioether derivatives having from 1 to 4 thioether functionalities were synthesized. Colloids were prepared in a two-phase system, and characterized by 1 H NMR and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The stability of colloids protected by thioethers increases with the number of ligands per molecule. Monothioethers need longer chain lengths or costabilization by (oct) 4 NBr in order to give stable, redispersible gold colloids. Go… Show more

“…PDMS prepolymer (Sylgard 184 silicone elastomer) and PDMS curing agent (Sylgard silicone elastomer curing agent) were purchased from Dow Corning Corporation. Synthesis and purification of thioether-modified calix [4]arene 1 [12], thioethermodified cavitand 2 [12], tris-thioether 3 [13], and didecylsulfide 4 [14] have been described elsewhere.…”

“…[77] So far, only a few studies investigating the stability of the gold-sulfide bond have been reported. [78,79] Dialkyl sulfide stabilized gold nanoparticles displayed reversible exchange already at about 50 8C. However, the multiple binding sites of the heptameric ligands 1-4 are expected to provide nanoparticles with increased stabilities due to kinetic stabilization.…”

“…8,9 Therefore, M n of D3OTP obtained from GPC calibrated with linear polystyrene standards might be lower than true molecular weight of D3OTP. Since the sulfide group (-CH 2 -S-CH 2 -) which is located in the hydrophilic core region of D3OTP has an affinity to gold, 10 Figure 1. The relatively sharp peaks from the α-protons of D3OTP at around 2.7 ppm changed to two new broad peaks shown at around 2.8 and 3.3 ppm when the gold salt is complexed.…”
