Formation of aqueous molecular nematic liquid crystal phase in poly(p-sulfophenylene sulfoterephthalamide)

Abstract: We report strong experimental evidence on the formation of a molecular lyotropic phase in water of a modified polyaramide, namely a fully sulfonated poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (Sulfo2PPTA) that exhibits similar liquid crystalline behaviour in water to its non-sulfonated counterpart (PPTA, commercially known as Kevlar or Twaron) in sulfuric acid.

“…For rheo-X-ray measurements the following equipment has been used (S. Viale et al 2005;Ruijter et al, 2006). Two glass coaxial capillaries with radii R out =0.5 (outer, unmoved) and R in =0.25 (inner, movable) and a length of ~10 cm combine the Couette cell ( Fig.8a).…”

“…In contrast to these extensive studies on the surfactants with flexible alkyl chains, there is no report concerning a rigid surfactant for the AuNP synthesis. In general, rigid molecules containing ionic groups conveniently self-assemble into well-defined nanostructures, such as rod-like aggregates 22 and ordered nematic nanostructures [23][24][25] in solution phase. Columnar nanostructures of a rigid surfactant were also reported in our previous study.…”

“…Additional photomicrographs of lyotropic LC phases of these polymers in different solvents are provided in Supplementary Materials (Figure S4) . These results are reminiscent of those exhibited by sulfonated poly(phenylene terephalamide)s that exhibit biphasic solutions as low as 1 wt% in water [ 71 , 72 , 73 , 74 ].…”
