Formation of a compact toroid for enhanced efficiency

Abstract: We report here our results on the formation of a plasma configuration with the generic name of compact toroid (CT). A method of compact toroid formation to confine, heat and compress a plasma is investigated. Formation of a compact torus using an additional toroidal magnetic field helps to increase the plasma current to a maintainable level of the original magnetic field. We design the Compact Toroid Challenge (CTC) experiment in order to improve the magnetic flux trapping during field reversal in the formatio… Show more

“…Because of its high beta nature and simply-connected geometry, sustainment of FRC had not been realized because of the limitation of additional heating and current drive [4]. The FRC, therefore, has been studied mostly for the formation technique of high-density magnetized plasmoids as, for example, the target of magnetized target fusion [5] and formation of highcurret and high-flux magnetized plasmoid [6]. Recently, high confinement performance of FRCs have been achieved on a C-2/C-2U device via collisional-merging; that is, the kinetic energy of translation is larger than the thermal and magnetic energy of the plasmoids being merged, process with large orbit high energy ions fed by neutral beam injection [7].…”

“…The effect was significant -the level of the captured flow exceeded 70%. Compression began to appear and the magnetic field intensified in the center of the chamber [5]. The third idea -it was decided to abandon the inductive storage in the form of a solenoid and switch to a flat inductance in the form of an Archimedes spiral.…”

“…When two FRC collide, their magnetic field lines reconnect, which is accompanied by plasma heating and a flash of soft X-ray radiation with a duration of up to 1 μs. For registration, a diamond semiconductor detector (PPD-PCD) [5] with an Al filter 5 μm thick was used, and the pulse of "all" radiation, starting from visible light, was well felt by the MP-38 transistor crystal. The duration of such radiation turned out to be about 15 μs.…”

“…In the WT state, the minimum energy equilibrium is force-free (∇P = J × B = 0), and the current is along the magnetic field. In some experiments, an additional toroidal magnetic field is used to increase the plasma current to maintain the original CT magnetic field [16].…”
