The study of relativizers in the Spanish language has not been quite explored from a sociolinguistic point of view. A few research papers have analyzed varieties found in Santiago de Chile, Mexico City, Sevilla, and Madrid. Nevertheless, none of them has addressed a Colombian variety in depth. This variationist study aims to fill the gap by reporting the results of a correlational study focused on the use and variation of relativizers in the preseea-Medellín corpus. An anova test, a Games-Howell test, multiple Tukey’s tests, and pairwise comparisons t-tests with Bonferroni correction were run to identify the variables with significant effects (e.g., geographical position, gender, level of education, and social class). Results suggest that, while there is significant diatopic variation in the selection of relativizers, diastratic variables have a minor role in their frequency of use. It was also noted that while the use of the pronoun que tends to spread in all varieties of Spanish, the relative adjectives cuyo and cuanto continue their trend towards disuse. Further studies are necessary to determine if this tendency to simplification is related to psycholinguistic constraints (i.e. mental load) or functional aspects of Spanish. Finally, this study opens the doors to the analysis of relativizers in other varieties of Colombian Spanish from a sociolinguistic perspective.

A pesar de ser un tema de interés y complejidad lingüística, el uso de pronombres de tratamiento tú, usted y vos en el habla del departamento del Quindío en Colombia no ha sido estudiado. El objetivo principal de esta investigación fue analizar el uso de los pronombres de tratamiento en este departamento a través de encuestas a personas cuyas edades oscilaron entre los 12 y 70 años (N = 200). Los factores sociales que se tuvieron en cuenta para el análisis fueron edad, educación, sexo y estrato socioeconómico. El trabajo concluye que género y poder son variables independientes que influyen y modifican el uso de los pronombres y que el dialecto quindiano se caracteriza por el uso predominante de usted sobre tú, que se podría interpretar como un usted de solidaridad. El pronombre vos, por otro lado, presenta un uso casi nulo, por lo que no se considera parte de la variación dialectal quindiana.

The use of space, both physical and virtual, has been extensively studied in relation to language, with many researchers considering it a determining factor. This chapter investigates the virtual linguistic landscape (VLL) of universities in ten Hispanic countries and five Portuguese-speaking countries to examine the use of pronouns of address (PoA) on their digital platforms. With the exponential increase in communication through digital means in recent years, computer-mediated communication has become a relevant topic in understanding human interaction through virtual devices. In this study, the authors specifically analyze the use of second-person singular pronouns in the VLL of higher education institutions in Hispanic and Portuguese-speaking countries, focusing on their social media platforms. The findings reveal that tú is the predominant PoA in Spanish-speaking institutions, whereas você prevails in Portuguese-speaking institutions on their social media.
