Abstract. The design of complex industrial critical systems involving asynchronous parallelism requires the use of formal methods, assisted by appropriate verification tools, in order to detect and correct errors as early as possible. In this paper, we illustrate the use of the Cadp toolbox for the formal modeling and verification of such systems by considering as an example a unit dedicated to the drilling of metal products. We describe in the Lotos language two different versions of the unit, supervised by a sequential and a parallel controller, respectively. Then, we perform the generation and minimisation of the two underlying state spaces, and also the inspection (visual checking) of the smaller one, corresponding to the version equipped with a sequential controller. Finally, we analyse the behaviour of the two versions of the drilling unit by means of two complementary verification methods, based on bisimulations (equivalence checking) and temporal logics (model checking).

Abstract. The language χ is a modeling and simulation language which is currently mainly used to analyse and optimize the performance of industrial systems. To be able to also verify functional properties of a system using a χ model, part of the language has been given a formal semantics. Rather than implementing a new model checker for χ, the philosophy is to provide automatic translations from χ into the specification languages of existing state-of-the-art model checkers such as, e.g., Spin and UPPAAL. In this paper, we propose for χ a notion of stuttering congruence, which is an adaptation of the notion of stuttering equivalence. We prove that our notion preserves the validity of CTL * −X formulas, that it preserves deadlock, and that it is indeed a congruence with respect to the constructs of χ. We also indicate how our notion is to be used to establish confidence in the correctness of a translation from χ into Promela.

The language χ has been developed for modeling of industrial systems. To obtain performance measures, its simulator has been successfully used in many industrial areas. However, for functional analysis, simulation is less applicable. Such analysis can be done in other environments. In this paper we present guidelines and techniques for translating χ specifications to Promela, the input language of the well known model checker Spin. We highlight the differences between the two languages and show, in a step by step manner, how some of them can be resolved. We conclude by giving the translation scheme and apply it to a small industrial case study.
