Formal Definitions for Design Spaces and Traces

Abstract: Within the domain of interactive system development and design, particularly for safety-critical systems, there is an inherent tension between formalisms used for software engineering methodologies and the creative aspects of design. In this paper we consider how we might better unify these by way of a framework for design spaces and design artefacts. We present formal definitions for simple and complex design spaces and then describe how they are incorporated into traces. We then discuss how these can be used… Show more

“…Design space literature has considered different approaches to design. Utilizing design spaces for interaction design is possible [38] and design space analysis has been one of the tools in the design of interactive systems [39,40]. Bowen and Dittmar [41] consider user-centered design, interaction design research, and engineering approaches to human-computer interaction.…”

“…Some researchers went beyond representation and studied the applications of design space analysis. Bowen and Dittmar (2017) used set theory to define a solution space that also incorporated the relationship between design artifacts and process stakeholders to trace design "states". Dinar et al (2011) used p-maps to compare how designers think about the problem.…”
