Form and Content: A Defense of Aesthetic Value in Science

Abstract: Those who wish to defend the role of aesthetic values in science face a dilemma: Aesthetic language is either used metaphorically for what are ultimately epistemic features, or it is used literally, but the importance of such values for science are unclear. This paper introduces a new account that gets around this problem by looking to an overlooked source of aesthetic value in science: the relation between form and content. A fit between the content of a thought experiment, and the way in which that content i… Show more

“…Suppose two thought experiments narrate identical content, but their narrative form differs. In line with Velleman's idea, aesthetically and literarily successful thought experiments give a sharper focus and a better grasp of their puzzle, while clumsy ones might fail to do so (Stuart 2016;Murphy 2020aMurphy , 2023. A successful thought experiment lays the shortest path toward the issue at its heart, provides a unique vantage point at a paradox and essentially captures something truly surprising and curious (French and Murphy 2021).…”

“…In this view, aesthetic and literary qualities of thought experiments can be seen as a proper component of their cognitive content (Arcangeli 2010(Arcangeli , 2021Meynell 2017;Murphy 2020a). These qualities help thought experiments do their epistemic job, such as increasing understanding or sparking an insight (Meynell 2014;Murphy 2020bMurphy , 2023.…”
