The correlation between GDP and research publications is an important issue in scientometrics. This article provides further empirical evidence connecting revealed comparative advantage in national research with effects on economic productivity. Using quantitative time series analysis, this study attempts to determine the nature of causal relationships between research output and economic productivity. One empirical result is that there is mutual causality between research and economic growth in Asia, whereas in Western countries the causality is much less clear. The results may be of use to underdeveloped nations deciding how to direct their academic investment and industry policy.

In recent decades there has been a sharp increase in China's scientific output. Behind its fast growth, little is known about China's comparative advantages in different academic disciplines. Meanwhile, despite China's rising position (now in second place worldwide for research output), its research quality has been long in dispute. Based on citation rates, many studies expressed negative opinions on the quality of China's scientific output. This paper argues that citation reflects more social impact than quality. On the other hand, the time lag between being cited and the eventual publication of citing papers masks the real recent situation in developing countries. In particular prior to 2006, almost half of research papers in China were published in Chinese journals, which were not visible (or readable) to people outside of China. Consequently, it is not surprising that citation rates of Chinese researchers were rather low. Given that the publication structure in China has changed tremendously in recent years, evaluation of the quality of Chinese science needs to be carried out according to the latest research output from China. This paper examines the comparative advantages of each academic discipline as well as their shifts over the years. Focusing on the top 5 per cent journals by each discipline, we evaluate the quality of China's scientific output compared to the rest of the world. Different from the criticism stated in previous literature, this paper finds that the quality of China's research in terms of publications in top journals is promising. Since 2006 the growth of scientific publications in China has been driven by papers published in English-language journals. The increasing visibility of Chinese science paves the way for its wider recognition and higher citation rates.

Innovation for inclusive development aims not only to produce products and services for 'base of the pyramid' (BoP) markets, but also to improve innovative capacity and empower those that form part of the BoP. Although a wide range of actors aim to support innovation for inclusive development, they lack proper methods to assess the impact that these projects have. This paper sets out to identify an appropriate method or approach for evaluating systems change brought about by innovation for inclusive development projects. Based on a systematic literature review, a process-level approach is proposed. This approach is focused on the components within a system and the changes that occur in the system functions. OPSOMMINGInklusiewe innovasie beoog nie net om produkte en dienste aan die basis van die piramide mark te verskaf nie, maar ook om hul te bemagtig en kapasiteit vir innovasie te verhoog. Innovasie rolspelers streef daarna om inklusiewe innovasie te bevorder, maar daar is 'n tekort aan voldoende metodes wat gebruik kan word om die impak van inklusiewe innovasie projekte te evalueer. Die doel van die studie is om 'n toepaslike metode vir die evaluasie van stelsel veranderinge, wat deur inklusiewe innovasie projekte meegebring is, te identifiseer. 'n Proses-vlak metode, wat fokus op die komponente in 'n stelsel en die veranderinge wat plaasvind in die stelsel se funksies, was voorgestel op grond van 'n sistematiese literatuurstudie.
