“…The mean annual rainfall increases with elevation from approximately 2450 mm per year at lower elevations to over 4000 mm per year at higher elevations. The mean annual temperature declines from 23 to 19°C along the elevation gradient (Weaver and Murphy, 1990;Silver et al, 1999). Within the Luquillo Mountains, there are four forest types along the elevation gradient: lower montane rain forest below 600 m.a.s.l (Tabonuco forest), montane rain forest between 600 and 900 m.a.s.l (Colorado forest), and Elfin/dwarf forest on the exposed slopes or ridges above 900 m.a.s.l, and Palm forest scattered on steep slopes and near riparian areas especially above 500 m.a.s.l (Weaver and Murphy, 1990).…”
