Forest Fire Prevention Using WSN Assisted IOT

Abstract: Internet of Things is the mainstay of the new era since its application becomes the future of day-to-day life. This work targets the IoT network assisted by WSN to prevent forest fire. We propose two-layer architecture of sensor network assisted by IoT enabled UAVs. The data flows in the proposed architecture in bottom-up fashion i.e., data is sensed by the nodes, which are deployed in the forest area (and sense temperature continuously). This data is transmitted to upper layer consisting of UAVs, which take a… Show more

“…The study from [19] focuses on leveraging the IoT and wireless sensor networks (WSN) to prevent forest fires proactively. Introducing a two-layer architecture, the sensor network at the bottom layer continuously monitors forest temperature and employs a two-step clustering algorithm to organize sensor nodes.…”

“…The method also introduced a way to reduce false alarms in case of fire to almost zero percent, by using three different types of sensors (temperature, smoke, and gas sensors) to validate that there is a case of fire while being energy efficient as well. A study by Vimal and Nigam [34] introduced a method to prevent fires using WSN along with IoT. The problem with this system was its requirements of a lot of network nodes in the wild for detection.…”

“…Forest fires wreak havoc on the habitats of wild animals and have a detrimental effect on agricultural yields. As a result, it is necessary to develop systems that provide authorities with timely and high-quality information to combat forest fires in the shortest possible time [59]. WSNs can bring a meaningful change in the fight against forest fires.…”

“…Typically, sensors are configured so that when temperature values exceed a predefined threshold, the nodes activate their radios for data transmission. The sensor nodes continuously monitor the forest environment to ensure temperatures remain within specified ranges [59]. In these application domains, collected data is processed centrally and distributed to appropriate stakeholders via alerts or notifications via a communication architecture.…”
