Forest Ecosystem Services: Issues and Challenges for Biodiversity, Conservation, and Management in Italy

Abstract: Although forest ecosystems are fundamental sources of services and global biodiversity, their capacity to maintain these benefits in the future is potentially threatened by anthropogenic impacts such as climate change, land use, and unsustainable management practices. Thus far, studies focusing on forests and their services have gained less attention compared with studies on other biomes. Additionally, management practices may potentially undermine the capacity of forests to sustain biodiversity conservation a… Show more

“…However, human management which aims to maximize the economic income of forests may potentially undermine the biodiversity [68] and weaken the forest resilience [69,70]. In the long-term, the relaxation of human management would potentially increase the diversity of planted forests and then enhance the forest resilience.…”

“…It is defined as "The direct and indirect contributions of ecosystems to human wellbeing" (TEEB 2010). Ecosystem services provide various materials and non-material benefits to human beings (Costanza et al 1997;Nelson et al 2009;Vizzarri et al 2015;Englund et al 2017). These services are grouped into four broad categories of provisioning, regulating, cultural and supporting ES.…”

“…Ecosystem services concept was initially introduced to raise public awareness on the importance of biodiversity for human existence and to conserve biodiversity. Forest is thus, the main sources of ecosystem services and are fundamental for life support systems (Vizzarri et al 2015). Forest ecosystem services have direct and indirect services.…”

“…A representative and wide network of protected areas (i.e., National Parks) has been a robust tool for conserving natural Mediterranean vegetation; the areas remain as refuges for several species and are cradles of diversity that can aid the expansion of natural vegetation under appropriate management policies [254]. The application of more sophisticated models, incorporating terrestrial ecosystem structure, ecosystem-service values at geographic scales and influencing factors such as climate, human activities and other variables, can provide very useful guidelines for making appropriate decisions to preserve the quality and quantity of ecosystem services as best as possible [255,256].…”
