Forest Aboveground Biomass Estimation and Mapping through High-Resolution Optical Satellite Imagery—A Literature Review

Abstract: This paper provides a comprehensive literature review on forest aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation and mapping through high-resolution optical satellite imagery (≤5 m spatial resolution). Based on the literature review, 44 peer-reviewed journal articles were published in 15 years (2004–2019). Twenty-one studies were conducted in Asia, eight in North America and Africa, five in South America, and four in Europe. This review article gives a glance at the published methodologies for AGB prediction modeling and … Show more

“…It selects a random number of samples from the training dataset chosen by the analyst and develops decision trees based on the most important variables [56,57]. The RF algorithm has been widely used in forest AGB estimation with remote sensing data and proved to have good performance [58][59][60]. The parameters ntree and mtry are the two key factors affecting accuracies in RF models.…”

“…The three-dimensional structure of forests is an important basis for estimating changes in forest biomass due to human activities or natural disturbances, as well as a crucial component for evaluating forest habitat quality and biodiversity on a regional scale [41]. Investigators need to develop large-scale, region-wide forest biomass estimation models by remote sensing and costly surveys.…”

“…A literature review serves the purpose of gathering data and arguments on research topics from researchers who have conducted relevant studies in support of research results based on phenomena that have occurred. The literature review was carried out by collecting several papers or papers with criteria adjusted by researchers, in this case related to mangrove forests and mangrove carbon [26]. The results of the paper collection are then studied more deeply to identify the desired issues.…”
