Heiloskopija je istraživačka tehnika kojom se proučavaju uzdignuća i ulegnuća koja oblikuju karakterističan uzorak na vanjskoj površini usnica. Otisak usnica smatra se jedinstvenim i analogan je otisku prsta. Svrha: Željelo se odrediti tipove ragada na zdravim usnicama muškaraca i žena s pomoću otiska usnica u hrvatskoj populaciji, ustanoviti postoji li statistički značajna razlika između muškaraca i žena u tipovima ragada te ima li razlike između otisaka usnica muškaraca i žena. Ispitanici i postupci: U istraživanju je sudjelovalo 40 muških i 50 ženskih nasumično odabranih ispitanika iz hrvatske populacije. Uzorak ragada na usnicama klasificiran je metodom prema Tsuchihashiju. Rezultati: Istraživanje je pokazalo da većina žena u Hrvatskoj pripada tipu 2 (40 %), a slijedi tip 1 (34 %). Tipovi 3 (12 %), 4 (8 %) i 5 (6 %) su rjeđi. Većina muškaraca pripada tipu 3 (35 %) i tipu 2 (25 %) te malo njih tipu 4 (15 %), zatim slijede tipovi 5 (12,5 %) i 1 (12,5 %). Zaključak: Utvrđene su statistički značajne razlike između muškaraca i žena s obzirom na tipove ragada na usnicama.

Forensics is a science that has a crucial role in the judicial process through examination and collection of physical evidence found at crime scenes. The involvement of forensic experts at crime scenes usually occurs in significant cases, where they are only called upon request from the authorities. This study aims to study the role of forensic medicine in helping investigators find material truth in murder cases, as well as identify possible obstacles. Through a library legal research and descriptive approach, secondary data such as legal documents and literature are analyzed to provide a clear and detailed picture of role of forensic science in assisting investigators in finding the material truth in murder cases and asserting the obstacle of it. The results showed that forensic medicine has a crucial role in uncovering material truths and providing legitimate evidence in murder cases. However, lack of coordination between law enforcement officials and forensic doctors can be an obstacle. Therefore, good cooperation and coordination between law enforcement officials and forensic doctors is the key to success in handling this case. The principle of justice must be upheld in the investigation process.

The analysis of dental features and patterns figures amongst the primary means for human identification established by the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL). Differently from fingerprint and genetic analyses, forensic dentistry does not necessarily require a minimum number of similarities between antemortem and postmortem data. In other words, human identification could be achieved from the analysis of a single distinctive tooth or even from a single dental identifier. This study aims to report a case of dental human identification of a charred body. Police investigations were carried out and narrowed the scenario towards a single victim. Fingerprints were destroyed by the fire, hence the relatives of the victim were requested to provide any antermotem dental data. A panoramic radiograph was provided. Developing third molars were visible as well as the endodontic treatment, post and core, and the nonmetallic crown of the maxillary right central incisor (tooth #11). Postmortem radiographs were taken from the cadaver and revealed the same therapeutic dental identifiers found in tooth #11. The observed similarities and the lack of discrepancies between antemortem and postmortem data converged to the positive identification of the victim. This study illustrated the importance of Forensic Dentistry for complex cases of human identification, such as those exposed to fire. Especial attention is driven to the possibility of safely achieving positive human identification with the contribution of a single distinctive tooth.
