Forecasting the development of the biped robot walking technique in Japan through S-curve model analysis

Abstract: Patents contain much significant technical information which can serve as an indicator of technological and economical development. This study attempts to forecast the development of the biped robot walking technique in Japan by use of the patent data obtained from the Japan Patent Office. The study applies linear regression to the patent data using three S-curve models developed by Loglet Lab, Pearl, and Gompertz individually. Various parameters inherent to each model including the least sum of modulus error … Show more

“…In addition, patent data represents a valuable source of technical information that can be used to plot the evolution of technologies over time (Liu and Wang, 2010). Accordingly, our work should be classified as a contribution to the domain of technology monitoring, where technological expert knowledge can add more context to data interpretation.…”

“…The growth curve model is used as a representative analysis method to analyze the development stage of specific technologies. The model can be used to monitor the level of development or to predict the development of technology [13], and research is being conducted to analyze the technology's lifecycle.…”
