Fore-Arc and Back-Arc Ground Motion Prediction Model for Vrancea Intermediate Depth Seismic Source

Abstract: A next generation ground motion model for the prediction of spectral accelerations both in the fore-arc and back-arc regions of the Carpathians Mountains is developed in this research for the Vrancea intermediate depth seismic source in Romania. This ground motion prediction equation (GMPE) is an updated version of the model given in Vacareanu et al. [2014] and is applicable in both the fore-arc and the back-arc regions. The strong ground motion database from which the prediction model is derived consists of o… Show more

“…The ground motion prediction equation (GMPE) used in the sensitivity analysis is the one developed for Vrancea subcrustal source by Vacareanu et al (2014b). In the present sensitivity analysis the GMPE is applied for the geometric mean of the two orthogonal horizontal components of peak ground acceleration (PGA).…”

“…The results show again that the YEA97 GMPE is graded better than the ZEA06 GMPE. In this study, the four GMPEs recommended in SHARE project are re-evaluated and, in addition, the ground motion prediction model of Vacareanu et al (2014b)-VEA14-is also tested. The grading is performed using some of the goodness-of-fit parameters given in (Scherbaum et al 2004(Scherbaum et al , 2009Delavaud et al 2012); moreover, the testing procedure of Kale and Akkar (2013) is employed, as well.…”

“…This method of simulating ground motions was recently evaluated by Pavel (2015) using strong ground motions recorded in Bucharest area during three intermediate-depth Vrancea earthquakes from 1986 and 1990. In addition, the recently developed ground motion model of Vacareanu et al (2015) is also used in the same purpose.…”

“…This seismic catalogue includes 1051 individual seismic events with M W C 7.0, and an additional 440 seismic events with M W C 7.5. Subsequently, the ground motion amplitudes were obtained from the ground motion model of Vacareanu et al (2015), also taking into account the inter-and intra-event variability.…”
