Forced fluid dynamics from blackfolds in general supergravity backgrounds

Abstract: We present a general treatment of the leading order dynamics of the collective modes of charged dilatonic p-brane solutions of (super)gravity theories in arbitrary backgrounds. To this end we employ the general strategy of the blackfold approach which is based on a long-wavelength derivative expansion around an exact or approximate solution of the (super)gravity equations of motion. The resulting collective mode equations are formulated as forced hydrodynamic equations on dynamically embedded hypersurfaces. We… Show more

“…Despite hydrodynamics being a well established research subject, there has been a substantial progress in its structural foundations in recent years. This includes an off-shell formulation of hydrodynamics and the development of classification schemes of its transport properties [1][2][3]; the construction of effective field theories and the formulation of action principles for dissipative This work has been highly motivated by the structure of long-wavelength perturbations of black branes in supergravity, where dissipative fluids with higher-form symmetries are naturally realised [23][24][25][26][27]. As the fundamental fields in supergravity include several higher-form gauge fields, generic black brane bound states can carry multiple higher-form (dipole) charges.…”

“…It could of course be that the metastable state at p = 1 has a very small gap such that the minimal temperature needed for a classical horizon already destabilises the vacuum [54]. This potential loophole might become visible by computing finite temperature corrections to probe actions, something that can be done in the blackfold approach [50,51].…”
