Forced Ecosystems and Digital Stepchildren: Reconfiguring Advertising Suppliers to Realize Disruptive Social Media Technology

Abstract: Research often examines disruption in the context of head-to-head competition between firms and technologies. In contrast, we examine the unique dynamics of disruptive technologies within supplier ecosystems. We do so through an inductive multiple case study set in the global advertising industry from 2008–2013, as the industry grappled with the emergence of social media. Using rich archival and field data, we closely track five global consumer goods manufacturers and their associated advertising suppliers as … Show more

“…Another source is simply asking how a “cool” yet under-studied phenomenon like fast decision making (Eisenhardt, 1989b) occurs. Or how a significant puzzle like cross-business collaboration (Martin and Eisenhardt, 2010) or technology adoption in an ecosystem (Ozcan and Hannah, 2020) is solved.…”

“…A third stream expands RBV beyond firm resource ownership to include ecosystem resources—that is, value-creating resources outside firm boundaries. This work highlights how both firm and ecosystem resources relate to a firm’s choice of technology strategy when entering an ecosystem industry (Kapoor & Furr, 2015; Ozcan & Eisenhardt 2009), how firms innovate (Hannah & Eisenhardt, 2018; Thatchenkery & Katila, 2021), how they adapt (Furr & Kapoor, 2018; Ozcan & Hannah, 2020), and firm performance (Adner & Kapoor, 2010; Burford, Shipilov & Furr, 2021; Jacobides & Tai, 2015). For example, in the global civilian drone industry, Bremner and Eisenhardt (2021) describe the strategic choice between using community resources to develop new products versus the firm’s internal engineering resources.…”
