Force Systems in the Initial Phase of Orthodontic Treatment—a Comparison of Different Leveling Archwires

Abstract: The measured arch wires' initial force systems differed significantly depending on the type of archwire and its material structure. Stranded arch wires produced lower force and moment levels, and we recommend their use in the initial phase of orthodontic treatment.

“…Though the size of these sensors is being reduced, the currently available ones are still larger than real teeth. Connecting the sensors directly to artificial teeth and brackets using a straight stick is an intuitive and common method 29,30) . Nevertheless, these systems cannot be expanded to the full arch because multiple sensors will impinge on each other.…”

“…This difficulty rests in the lack of suitable methods available for objective control of the force-moment systems applied during therapy.

“…New materials and manufacturer specifications are an additional orientation aid in the conception and activation of fixed-appliance mechanics for practicing orthodontists. However, there are even certain limitations in those regards, as a recent study has proven that -in contrast to the widely-held belief on the part of clinicians, and information from manufacturers -excessive loading of teeth in the initial leveling and aligning phase cannot always be impeded by the use of superelastic wire materials [22]. The lack of suitable measuring methods for simultaneous and uncomplicated documentation of force-moment systems on individual teeth involves not only clinical applications, but research in biomechanics and biology for orthodontics as well.…”
