Foraminifera from the Norian–Rhaetian reef carbonates of the Taurus Mountains (Saklıkent, Turkey)

Abstract: Norian-Rhaetian reef carbonates are exposed in several localities in Taurus Mountains. They predominately contain hypercalcified sponges, followed by scleractinian corals and other less numerous organisms. A coherent NorianRhaetian reef structure is exposed near the small town of Saklıkent, west of Antalya. Foraminifers occur in reef carbonates of Saklıkent by numerous genera as shown in this paper. Two species -Siculocosta taurica and Siculocosta sadati -are described as new. The foraminiferal association of … Show more

“…Within this area, there is an outlier a several hundred meters across of Norian reefal carbonates. The limestones have a distinctive snow-white color, very different from the grey-to-brown reefal carbonates that comprise the Cipit boulders of other Norian-age outcrops in the vicinity (Riedel 1990;Senowbari-Daryan and Link 2017). There are no other known outcrops of this Saklıkent-type reefal facies in the Taurus Mountains.…”

“…Samples collected during geological mapping were studied for planktonic and benthic foraminifera and for radiolaria. Planktonic and benthic foraminifera and calpionellids from the Mesozoic rocks were identified in thin-sections based on Zaninetti (1976), Altıner & Zaninetti (1980), Zaninetti et al (1982), Al-Shaibani et al (1983, Altıner (1991), Altıner & Özkan (1991), Martini et al (2004Martini et al ( , 2009, Premoli Silva & Verga (2004) and Senowbari-Daryan & Link (2017). Larger benthic foraminifera (nummulitids, orthophragminids) from the Eocene sequence were studied both in thin-section and as loose individual foraminifera.…”
