Foraging habits of reef fishes associated with mangroves and seagrass beds in a Caribbean lagoon: A stable isotope approach

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Mangroves and seagrass beds represent suitable fish habitats as nurseries or feeding areas. This study was conducted in a Caribbean lagoon to assess the foraging habits of juvenile transient reef fishes in these two habitats. Twelve fish species were sampled in coastal mangroves, an offshore mangrove islet, and a seagrass bed site, and stable isotope analyses were performed on fishes and their prey items. The SIAR mixing model indicated that transient fishes from both mangroves and seagrass beds deri… Show more

“…3) ( Parnell et al, 2010 ; Parnell et al, 2013 ). We ran the mixing models separately for each water depth (1-5 m) sediment, and we only included as potential sources those primary producers for which both δ 13 C and δ 15 N values were available: macroalgae blades ( δ 13 C−13 ± 0.2 ‰, δ 15 N 1.74 ± 1.59 ‰), seagrass leaves ( δ 13 C −11 ± 0.3 ‰, δ 15 N 2 ± 0.2 ‰), and mangrove leaves ( δ 13 C -29 ± 2 ‰, δ 15 N 1.1 ± 0.09 ‰) ( Duarte et al, 2018 ; Campbell & Fourqurean, 2009 ; Vaslet et al, 2015 ).…”

“…Accuracy was obtained on 7 and 10 replicates for LGSP and LCSP, respectively, performed on samples and standards, i.e., standard atropine value (0.5 ‰ C and 0.4‰ N), IAEA-CH6 sucrose (δ 13 C = −10.4 ± 0.2‰) and IAEA-N1 (δ 15 N = +0.4 ± 0.2‰). The samples were acidified with HCl to remove inorganic carbonates to avoid any modification of nitrogen isotopic signature [18,[66][67][68]. The total organic carbon (TOC) and carbon and nitrogen isotopes were used to discriminate between the allochthonous input and the autochthonous organic matter related to the productivity of the lake.…”
