Foragers of sympatric Asian honey bee species intercept competitor signals by avoiding benzyl acetate from Apis cerana alarm pheromone

Abstract: While foraging, animals can form inter- and intraspecific social signalling networks to avoid similar predators. We report here that foragers of different native Asian honey bee species can detect and use a specialized alarm pheromone component, benzyl acetate (BA), to avoid danger. We analysed the volatile alarm pheromone produced by attacked workers of the most abundant native Asian honey bee, Apis cerana and tested the responses of other bee species to these alarm signals. As compared to nest guards, A. cer… Show more

“…In GC-EAD tests, all CHCs lacking an oxygen-containing group elicited weak responses (47, 48). Thus, EAD systems with a high sensitivity amplifier (14, 49) and static noise control (filtering the air flow with copper mesh and a stainless steel shield cage) were used in this research. The setup enabled the first EAD recording of honeybee responses to CHCs.…”

“…In order to detect active compounds from elaiosomes of S. tuberosa, we used a custom gas chromatography coupled with electroantennographic detection analysis (GC-EAD) system Wen et al, 2017). For each preparation, we severed one antenna from an individual of V. velutina, cut the tip open with iris scissors, and mounted it between the glass reference electrode and the recording electrode, both containing insect Ringer's solution.…”
