For an anthropology of destiny

Abstract: This preface develops an argument for a comparative anthropology that takes the concept of destiny as a fertile laboratory for anthropological thought. The articles in this collection show how destiny's distinguishing heuristic feature may be what we call "malleable fixity": a paradoxical juxtaposition of images of temporal and historical fixity with a practical reckoning and openended self-reorientation. Exploring the radically different ways in which destiny is evoked, enacted, and (re)theorized locally, we … Show more

“…89 Rather than fatalism, this kind of reasoning is best understood through anthropological explorations of ‘destiny’ as a way to make sense of how ‘people imagine and reckon with determining powers’. 93 An anthropology of destiny allows us to consider how to explore the intersection of a sense of one's ‘capacity, and responsibility to act in their lives’ and ‘worldly and transcendental powers’ [p. 91]. The result is often a malleable fixity, a sense that one makes decisions and navigates terrains that are at least partly preordained.…”

“…Yet herein lies a contradiction: Fate is predetermined but can also be controlled (Harrell 1987;Howlett 2022a;Sangren 2012). It is a "malleable fixity" (Elliot and Menin 2018). The popular song gives an optimistic ratio for this malleability, which accords with the positive thinking that teachers attempt to instill in warriors.…”
