Foodborne Parasites in Europe: Present Status and Future Trends

Abstract: Although foodborne parasites (FBPs) are becoming recognized as important foodborne pathogens, they remain neglected compared with bacterial and viral foodborne pathogens. As drivers for infection with FBPs are variable, it is often unclear for funding bodies where research should be prioritized. Through a COST Action (Euro-FBP; FA1408), we harnessed Europe-wide expertise to address these questions, using an Expert Knowledge Elicitation approach. Eating habits, lack of food-chain control, lack of awareness from… Show more

“…However, it is reasonable to speculate about the management of the washing systems used in food industry. Trevisan et al [39] referred that managing water sustainably in agriculture means increased utilization of wastewater for irrigation, reusing freshwater to wash the products and therefore increasing the chances for RTE/packaged fruit and vegetables to become contaminated [39]. Nevertheless, testing water samples from washing/packing facilities and the water used for irrigation of bulk products are warranted in order to decipher the degree of Toxoplasma oocyst contamination on fruit and vegetables.…”

“…The climate changes, new feeding habits, and globalization of food supply chains may increase the worldwide incidence of some foodborne diseases [3,4]. Unfortunately, foodborne parasites remain neglected compared with bacterial and viral pathogens [3]. Therefore, studies in this field, like epidemiological surveys [5,6], development of novel diagnostic tools [7][8][9], drug discovery [10], or investigation of pathogenicity [11], are particularly valuable.…”
