Food stability model: A framework to support decision‐making in a context of climate change

Abstract: Global environmental changes coupled with socioeconomic changes are major challenges to food security. Changes in climate affect most food crops, particularly in countries that rely on agriculture for subsistence. The article proposes a model to analyze food stability in the context of climate change. Genetic improvement, agrobiodiversity, sustainable intensification, climate monitoring, and market monitoring were considered key perspectives for the balanced scorecard to achieve stability in food production. “…Food stability impacts the other food security pillars (access, availability, and utilization). Moreover, it requires the economic, political, and social sustainability of food systems, which are vulnerable to environmental conditions, land distribution, available resources, conflicts, and political situations [ 190 ]. Food stability necessitates increased efforts and expenditures to achieve food security in the sustainable development goals, especially in light of increased academic and governmental interest in incorporating sustainability values into policies.…”

“…On the other hand, Boratynska and Huseynov [ 101 ] have proposed food technology innovation as a sustainable driver of food security and a promising solution to the problem of food insecurity in developing countries. Due to the higher food production demand to support the expanding urban population while having limited water and land availability, higher investments in technology and innovation are needed to ensure that food systems are more resilient [ 190 ]. Boratynska and Huseynov [ 101 ] have argued that, in general, using innovative technologies to produce healthy food products is frequently a concern.…”

“…Consistent with the same study, urbanization is found to have a signi cant positive impact on food security in sub-Saharan Africa. Political stability ensures a certain degree of tranquility in agricultural activities, which helps to increase the amount of food stocks over time (Ribeiro et al, 2021).…”

“…Urban population growth (Urbpop) as noted by Candelise et al (2021) is able to affect the level of food security. Finally, political stability (Spop) contributes to increasing the level of stability and availability of food(Ribeiro et al, 2021). Imports (Imp) also positively regulate the supply of food in a country(Candelise et al, 2021).Here are the results of the base model.…”

“…Food security is a problem that can threaten national security. Greenhouse gas emissions from the food industry cause climate change and negatively affect food systems and food security (Ribeiro et al, 2021). Carbon emissions from the agricultural sector also negatively affect production.…”
