Food Security in North-East Region of India — A State-wise Analysis

Abstract: With the adoption of high-yielding varieties of paddy, the foodgrains production has increased in NorthEast region of India. To estimate the growth performance of agriculture, time series data on area, production and productivity of foodgrains have been analysed for the period 1972-73 to 2011-12, which was divided into three decades, viz. 1982-83 to 1991-92 (I decade), 1992-93 to 2001-02 (II decade), 2002-03 to 2011-12 (III decade) and overall period 1972-73 to 2011-12. “…Hills dominate the region outside the Brahmaputra Valley, with lush green forests and copious rain. As a result of the hilly terrian, NER is not self-sufficient in producing rice-the staple food grain of the inhabitants-or legumes, but the region has 53 percent marketable surplus in fruit production (Roy et al 2016). Table 2.5 shows the pattern of the revealed comparative advantage (RCA) of NER states in 2013-14 in growing six horticultural subgroup crops: fruits, spices, vegetables, plantation crops, medicinal and aromatic plants, and flowers.…”

“…Rice is the staple principal food crop of the North East Region. Among the North Eastern States, Manipur stands third in area and production [14]. Population has increased by 12.05% during 2001-2011, whereas the state has registered negative annual growth (-0.48%) in the case of area under rice during 2000-01 to 2011-12 [15].…”

“…In order to measure the percentage contribution of area, productivity and their interaction towards the production of foodgrains, vegetables and fruits, the technique of decomposition has been adopted as used by several researchers (Bastine and Palanisami, 1994;Bhatnagar and Nandal, 1994;Mundinamani et al, 1995, Kalamkar et al, 2002, Roy et al, 2015.The change in the production of Vegetables between any time periods can be expressed as Change in production=Productivity effect + Area effect+ Interaction effect…”
