Food‐Processing Wastes

Abstract: Literature published in 2012 and early 2013 related to food processing wastes treatment for industrial applications is reviewed. This review is a subsection of the Treatment Systems section of the annual Water Environment Federation literature review and covers the following food processing industries and applications: general, meat and poultry, fruits and vegetables, dairy and beverage, and anaerobic treatment of food wastes.

“…The development of efficient technologies and strategies for the reprocessing of environmentally friendly waste and public accep-tance prevent the transformation of food waste into added value [73]. Physicochemical and biological treatment, including anaerobic and membrane treatment technologies, are techniques used to treat waste generated in food industries [74]. Children's cognitive development is altered by exposure to pesticides used in the production of food products, and antibiotics are used in livestock production.…”

“…Lactic acid is biodegradable, a much desired characteristic for food industry for packaging applications. Although produced biotechnologically, the recovery of lactic acid through traditional recovery methods such as crystallization, solvent extraction filtration, and carbon treatment evaporation have high operational cost, so other methods such as filtration in series, distillation, and distillation simultaneously with reaction are proposed to extract lactic acid as their cost is lower [51].…”
