Food group sources of nutrients in the dietary patterns of the DASH-Sodium trial☆☆☆

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to identify major food group sources of several essential nutrients in the two dietary patterns used in the DASH-Sodium trial: a control diet and the DASH dietary pattern. The DASH-Sodium trial was a multicenter, randomized, controlled-feeding trial comparing the effects of three levels of sodium and two dietary patterns on blood pressure. Nutrient contents of all the menus for both the control and the DASH diets were analyzed and examined for their dietary sources from 13 food groups.… Show more

“…Nevertheless, in studies evaluating the effects of whole foods, it is usually not possible to isolate the contributions of individual components. Whole-grain products are leading sources of several dietary factors that are associated with blood pressure reduction, such as fiber, magnesium and potassium (Lin et al, 2003). Thus, when consumed as whole foods, the effects of multiple dietary changes may contribute in an additive or synergistic manner.…”

“…This might be an important shortcoming, because each DASH food group contributes critical nutrients. 20 More comprehensive applications of the DASH diet to observational data were used in the Iowa Women's Health Study 7 and the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial. 28 In the Iowa Women's Health Study, no association between DASH adherence and incidence of (self-reported) hypertension and cardiovascular mortality existed.…”

“…In contrast, the DASH diet emphasizes fruits and vegetables (9.6 servings per day at 2,100 kcal) and low-fat dairy foods (2.7 servings per day at 2,100 kcal), which are the key defining DASH food groups. In addition, compared with the control diet, the DASH diet had higher amounts of whole grains (4.1 vs 0 servings per day), fish (0.5 vs 0.2 servings per day), and nuts and seeds (0.6 vs 0 serving per day), and fewer servings of fats (2.5 vs 5.8 servings per day), red meat (0.5 vs 1.5 servings per day), and sweets (0.5 vs 3.2 servings per day) per 2,100 kcal (18).…”
