Food flows between counties in the United States

Abstract: Food consumption and production are separated in space through flows of food along complex supply chains. These food supply chains are critical to our food security, making it important to evaluate them. However, detailed spatial information on food flows within countries is rare. The goal of this paper is to estimate food flows between all county pairs within the United States. To do this, we develop the Food Flow Model, a data-driven methodology to estimate spatially explicit food flows. The Food Flow Model … Show more

“…Due to the challenges associated with collecting domestic trade data, few studies focus on U.S. domestic trade. Early exceptions include McCallum (1995), and Anderson and Van Wincoop (2003), whereas more recent ones are Lin, Dang, and Konar (2014); Lin et al (2019); and Szewerniak, Xu, and Dall'Erba (2016). Yet, none of them focus explicitly on domestic trade flows of crops.…”

“…Dependencies in the FEW systems have been established, using sub-national virtual water transfers to link the systems together [78]. Domestic commodity flows are driven by geographical proximity [79] which introduces spatially-correlated risks into FEW supply chains. For example, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New Mexico and Texas all exhibit strong transfer dependencies and an overreliance on the High Plain aquifer for irrigation.…”

“…To better assess the interaction between supply chains and water resources we need fine-grained commodity flow information. For this reason, recent research has developed methods to map food flows between counties in the US [79]. Future work can build on this to model food supply chains in time and determine the critical infrastructure that enables virtual water flows.…”

“…A recent research study tracking the food supply chain found 9.5 million links between American counties where food products were farmed and how they found their way to retailers. 3 See figure 1 for a visualization of the researchers' findings.…”
