Though algorithms promise many benefits including efficiency, objectivity and accuracy, they may also introduce or amplify biases. Here we study two well-known algorithms, namely PageRank and Who-to-Follow (WTF), and show to what extent their ranks produce inequality and inequity when applied to directed social networks. To this end, we propose a directed network model with preferential attachment and homophily (DPAH) and demonstrate the influence of network structure on the rank distributions of these algorithms. Our main findings suggest that (i) inequality is positively correlated with inequity, (ii) inequality is driven by the interplay between preferential attachment, homophily, node activity and edge density, and (iii) inequity is driven by the interplay between homophily and minority size. In particular, these two algorithms reduce, replicate and amplify the representation of minorities in top ranks when majorities are homophilic, neutral and heterophilic, respectively. Moreover, when this representation is reduced, minorities may improve their visibility in the rank by connecting strategically in the network. For instance, by increasing their out-degree or homophily when majorities are also homophilic. These findings shed light on the social and algorithmic mechanisms that hinder equality and equity in network-based ranking and recommendation algorithms.

Objetivo El objetivo de este trabajo es construir una variable multidimensional que recoja todos los aspectos que el cliente evalúa en el restaurante: el servicio, la comida y el entorno, y que recibirá el nombre de experiencia gastronómica en el restaurante. Metodología La toma de dos submuestras (70 clientes de restaurantes exclusivos, y 105 de restaurantes moderados) y el uso de un Modelo de Ecuaciones Estructurales, ha permitido analizar el efecto moderador que ejerce el tipo de restaurante en la formación de la experiencia, así como en la satisfacción e intención del cliente. Conclusiones El tipo de restaurante ejerce un papel moderador en la formación de la experiencia gastronómica en el restaurante a partir de la calidad del entorno y de la comida, siendo mayores los efectos en clientes del restaurante exclusivo. También modera el efecto de la experiencia gastronómica en el restaurante sobre la satisfacción siendo mayor en los clientes del restaurante exclusivo, mientras que no hay diferencias en el efecto de la satisfacción sobre la intención entre restaurantes.

ABSTRACT:The article is a comparative study of islands' reactions to the global financial crisis. The main aim is to identify conditions which influence how the effects of the crisis in the tourism sector differed between selected island territories. Seventeen island territories which rely on tourism were selected for analysis. Each reacted differently to the global financial crisis, especially with regard to changes in tourist movement, employment in tourism, and expenditure by foreign tourists. The factors analysed are: length of time as an independent state or dependent territory, degree of dependence on tourism, the diversity of the mix of foreign markets from which tourists arrive, level of dominance of the main foreign market, level of dependence on European and North-and South American markets, duration of flights from the main market, level of economic development, quality of life of the island area's residents, tourist expenditure, and changes in government expenditure on tourism. The statistical analysis was conducted using both the Spearman and the Kendall rank correlation coefficients.
