Food eating patterns and health: a reexamination of the Ten-State and HANES I surveys

Abstract: Dietary, clinical, and biochemical data from the Ten-State Nutrition Survey (1968 to 1970) and the Health and Nutrition Examination Survey I (1971 to 1974), have been reexamined by factor analysis to focus attention on eating patterns as a means of relating food intake to health. The seven statistically different eating patterns generated were characterized by disproportionate consumption of different food groups. The relationship between the combination of foods that people ate and the state of their nutritio… Show more

“…Several early studies used factor analytic techniques to examine patterns of foods consumed in a single day based on 24 h dietary recall measures (Gex-Fabry et al, 1988;Iizumi & Amemiya, 1986;Schwerin et al, 1981;1982). For example, Schwerin et al, (1981) conducted factor analyses of 24 h dietary recall data collected in two large population surveys in the USA.…”

“…Toyokawa ( (15) suggested that a food consumption pattern model is useful in studying the effects of foods on the incidence and progress of disease. The present study shows that the food consumption pattern is useful for predicting the serum cholesterol level.…”
