“…Even if 75% have or already had students with food allergy, almost half of the participants of our study answered that their school did not have an emergency action plan and they did not know that intramuscular adrenaline is the indicated medication to use and how to use it. It has been shown that all schools must have established protocols in order to reduce the incidence of fatal allergic reactions and school training with epinephrine autoinjectors every 6 months should be done to increase adherence to proper technique 3,4 The 2019 Chicago Food Allergy Research survey before and after a 1-h educational session in six private schools in Houston also showed that a 1-h educational session improved knowledge and attitudes in personnel in the intervention schools. 5 Our work is descriptive and representative of the reality in schools in the reference area of a Level III Hospital in Portugal's second largest city.…”

“…Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can be fatal, and the only treatment is an epinephrine injection 33 . Nevertheless, the participants in the present study were most uncomfortable administering epinephrine injections, possibly because of lack of training, in that only 1.4% of the participants reported being trained to administer the injection.…”

“…The insignificant associations between sociodemographic factors and food allergy management determined in the present study and also another study in Saudi Arabia 46 may indicate that sociodemographic factors may not be substantial factors when it comes to food allergy management. More attention should be focused on the policies and guidelines to improve food allergy management, including hygiene policies, a food ban or no food sharing policy, epinephrine availability, a personalised action plan, the need for food allergy training, and open dialogue and engagement between school policymakers, school personnel and parents, as well as an anti‐bullying policy 33 . These can serve as guidelines for school policymakers to develop a comprehensive plan and strategy for protecting children with food allergies when they are at school.…”

“…When food crosses the disturbed digestive barrier, proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL25 and IL33, are released, which activate dendritic and lymphoid cells [1,15,27]. These activated cells lead to naive T transformation with the acquisition of the Th2 cellular phenotype, which stimulates B cells to produce food allergenspecific IgE [28][29][30]. This sensitization is the recognition of a food antigen as a threat.…”
