Fonsecaea associated cerebral phaeohyphomycosis in a post-COVID-19 patient: A first case report

Abstract: Phaeohyphomycosis, previously known as chromoblastomycosis, is a chronic mycosis, usually affecting the skin. It is caused by dematiaceous fungi, which are a group of fungi that produce melanin in their cell walls. Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis occurs as a part of invasive presentation of the fungi, which usually affects immunocompromised patients, but may affect immunocompetent individuals as well. Cerebral infection in phaeohyphomycosis is associated with a poor prognosis regardless of the immune status of the … Show more

“…The other major factors that reduced immune functions include malnutrition, tumors, and kidney transplantations. Under the background of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Simin Laiq was the first to report a case of Fonsecaea -associated cerebral PHM in a 73 years old Omani diabetic lady who presented headache and visual disturbance 6 weeks after recovery from COVID-19 pneumonia ( Laiq et al., 2022 ). Actually, treatment with steroids and exacerbation of diabetes during COVID-19 infection may lead patients to be immunocompromised and more susceptible to fungal infections.…”

“…from Oman also reported a case of post-COVID-19 CH. [ 5 ] Such a case raises the question of whether post-COVID-19 CH is a Middle Eastern replica of post-COVID-19 mucormycosis, which has comparable agent, host, and environmental factors. Therefore, we emphasize more observation, reporting, and study of such cases.…”
