Fomites and the environment did not have an important role in COVID-19 transmission in a Brazilian mid-sized city

Abstract: It is not clear if COVID-19 can be indirectly transmitted. It is not possible to conclude the role of the environment in transmission of SARS-CoV-2 without studying areas in which people transit in great numbers. In this work we aimed to better understand the role of environment in the spread of COVID-19. We investigated the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in fomites as well as in the air and in the sewage using RT-qPCR. We studied both, a reference market area and a COVID-19 reference hospital at Barreiras city, Brazi… Show more

“…We computed the numbers of individuals who had COVID-19 between the first and second vaccine doses ( n = 5) and after the second dose ( n = 5). COVID-19 history was based on experimental validation by reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR), using a previously described CDC method ( 17 ), and on validated records of local public health authorities. Participants provided serum samples, which were subjected to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).…”

“… 1 Though SARS-CoV-2 remains viable for hours on contaminated surfaces under ideal experimental conditions, in real world settings replication competent virus is only rarely recovered from surfaces and then only at extremely low levels. 20 , 21 , 22 In the few case reports where fomite transmission has been suggested, respiratory transmission cannot be excluded. 1 …”

“…In relation to sanitising, hand hygiene is recognised good practice for the prevention of many infectious diseases, so it should not be dismissed or discouraged (but equally, should not be over-emphasised). In relation to fomite transmission, a large Brazilian study detected no SARS-CoV-2 virus on over 400 samples of mask fronts, cell phones, paper money or card machines during a wave of the pandemic 54 . In other words, there is some evidence against the importance of fomite transmission.…”
