Follicular Transplantation

Abstract: Because of their small "physiologic" size, follicular implants enable the surgeon to transplant large numbers in a single session. Follicular transplantation will greatly increase the benefits of the hair restoration procedure when the patient is thoroughly evaluated and when the procedure is undertaken after careful short- and long-term planning.

“…This technique has been in use since the 1980s, but has been more contemporarily described by BERNSTEIN et al 2 and RASSMAN and CARSON 20 . The micrografting technique has been shown to be an improvement over larger micrografts, although when originally introduced by FUGITA for scalp transplantation 9 , it received criticism for (a) producing thin hair, (b) inconsistent graft growth, (c) a need to transplant extra skin into a wider recipient area.…”

“…Now with the use of magnification loupes and microscopes, the surgeon's best option for selecting finer single hairs for the frontal hairline is to separate them as they are cut in follicular units. (1) Others have suggested the use of bisected grafts. (2) The postauricular area (3) is an excellent source of finer hair; the donor scar will not stretch like that of an incision placed in the lower quarter of the "safe zone.…”

“…The significant disadvantage of this method is linear scar formation in the donor area [11][12][13][14]. In the past 10-15 years, a new hair restoration technique, which requires no strip harvesting, was introduced.…”
