Folic acid supplementation during treatment of psoriasis with methotrexate: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

Abstract: This study suggests that supplementation with FA during long-term MTX treatment reduces the efficacy of MTX in the control of psoriasis. Due to the relatively small sample size and short duration of this study, no conclusions can be drawn regarding the possibility that FA may reduce the side-effects of MTX.

“…In 16 of them, trial results were published in several different articles, one relating the QOL findings and the other(s) the clinical outcomes [7, 9, 18,28,29,30, 33, 34, 40, 44, 51, 55, 57, 59, 67, 72]. “…Some studies, however, indicate that this combination may be associated with decreased efficacy of methotrexate. [3][4][5][6][7] L-methylfolate (Deplin Nestle Health Science; Pam Lab Inc, Covington, Louisiana) is a relatively new medical food used as an adjunctive therapy for treatment of depression. The mechanism of action is that L-methylfolate, the biologically active form of folate, is the only metabolite of folate that crosses the bloodebrain barrier where it regulates the formation of the cofactor tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), which is necessary for the synthesis of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.…”
