Foliar Nutrition, Biostimulants and Prime-Like Dynamics in Fruit Tree Physiology: New Insights on an Old Topic

Abstract: Despite the fact that the usage of foliar nutrients has long history, many aspects of fertilization through leaves are still unknown. Herein, we review the current knowledge regarding the canopy fertilization putting special emphasis on Fe nutrition and briefly provide insights into the nanofertilizer technology of the foliar feeding of fruit crops. In addition, this paper discusses the main aspects of the foliar application of biostimulants regarding crucial factors of fruit cropping systems, such as fruit yi… Show more

“…Since the 1940s and 1950s, scientific research on the beneficial impact of foliar application has been explored (Tanou et al, 2017). There exist two theories to explain how exogenous inputs via foliar application are delivered to plant cell tissue, once they reached leaf surface: (1) transfer into leaf tissues via transcuticular penetration (Smilkova et al, 2019); or (2) penetration through leaf stomata (Tejada et al, 2016).…”

“…Recently, several reviews collected the knowledge on plant biostimulant definitions, categories, modes of action in plants, and perspectives for further research and applications in agriculture (e.g., Brown & Saa, ; Bulgari, Cocetta, Trivellini, Vernieri, & Ferrante, ; Calvo et al., ; De Pascale et al., ; Du Jardin, ; Halpern et al., ; Nardi et al., ; Posmyk & Szafrańska, ; Rafiee et al., ; Tanou, Ziogas, & Molassiotis, ; Yakhin et al., ). We thus did not aim to make another comprehensive review of this kind, but instead to review the biostimulant research in Croatia, focusing on horticultural plant species.…”

“…Another type of products that falls within the definition of biostimulants, such as compost, improves the development and growth of peach trees [15]. On the other hand, it is important to point out that there is not only an increase in the productions, but also an organoleptic improvement of production in the case of fruit trees [16].…”
