The demand for biostimulants has been growing at an annual rate of 10 and 12.4% in Europe and Northern America, respectively. The beneficial effects of humic substances (HS) as biostimulants of plant growth have been well-known since the 1980s, and they can be supportive to a circular economy if they are extracted from different renewable resources of organic matter including harvest residues, wastewater, sewage sludge, and manure. This paper presents an overview of the scientific outputs on application methods of HS in different conditions. Firstly, the functionality of HS in the primary and secondary metabolism under stressed and non-stressed cropping conditions is discussed along with crop protection against pathogens. Secondly, the advantages and limitations of five different types of HS application under open-fields and greenhouse conditions are described. Key factors, such as the chemical structure of HS, application method, optimal rate, and field circumstances, play a crucial role in enhancing plant growth by HS treatment as a biostimulant. If we can get a better grip on these factors, HS has the potential to become a part of circular agriculture.

Different substances from the natural origin which have beneficial effects on plant growth and development, stress resistance, and crop yield and quality can be called biostimulants or biostimulators. Their physiological effects depend on their composition as they contain various organic and mineral compounds which plants can use as metabolites, growth regulators, and nutrients; however, biostimulants cannot be considered biofertilizers. Biostimulants applied in plant production have been widely considered as an environment‐friendly agricultural practice—and so are now among tools used in sustainable agriculture. Here, we discuss the results of the biostimulants’ effect investigations performed in Croatia, focused on horticultural crops, with edible plant species, such as tomato, garlic, bell pepper, lettuce, strawberry, garden cress, and basil, as well as ornamentals, such as wild rose, wax begonia, Mexican and French marigold, moss rose, everlasting flower, common zinnia, English primrose, and scarlet sage. The investigated biostimulants were applied at all plant growth stages, from germination to full plant and fruit or flower commercial maturity, using the seed treatment, foliar application, or irrigation. To evaluate biostimulant effectiveness, various morphological, physiological, and quality traits were analyzed. In this wide array of studies, the evaluated biostimulants mostly enhanced seed and transplant vigor, stimulated vegetative growth, improved nutrient acquisition and distribution within the plant, increased antioxidative capacity of plant tissues, contributing to higher stress tolerance, and improved plant yield and fruit/flower quality. In general, the research reviewed here implies possible benefits of biostimulant application in horticultural production, especially in stressful growth conditions, such as the transplant stage, reduced fertilization, or incidence of other abiotic stress. Considering possible interactions among the contained physiologically active compounds, the effects on plants may depend on dose, time of treatment, growth conditions, and plant species. Therefore, further research of biostimulant applications in horticultural production is suggested.

Due to the increase of high-density holdings, especially of olive trees, the nutritional requirements of the plants are higher per unit area, which implies that a greater contribution of fertilizers to the soil is needed. Opting for fertilizers of inorganic origin will produce an increase in the pollution of the soil. In the face of this possible soil contamination, our aim is to analyze the effect of biostimulants as an alternative to chemical fertilizers, to steadily produce and maintain high quality standards during the life of the crop. Our objective is using more environmentally friendly products in order to satisfy one of the most important demands from both consumers and the authorities. In this study, we carried out five different treatments in addition to a control treatment with a supply of NPK, from inorganic products, which are used to control fertilization with a solution obtained from seaweed extracts. These treatments were applied in two crop cycles for two of the most important varieties in the current olive tree growing scenario: Arbequina and Koroneiki. Hernández-Hernandez et al.; AJAAR, 10(4): 1-11, 2019; Article no.AJAAR.49116 2 This study was developed in the farm Pozohondo, which is located in a crop zone by the Palancia river (Castellón, Valencia, Spain), in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, where the olive trees were established in a high-density system with a planting framework of 4 x 1.5 m. We ensured an exhaustive control of the nutritional needs of the holding by using a fertigation system. We could notice differences in the productions of each applied treatment, avoiding any possible biases through the additional control of 100 randomly selected olives from each of the samples. There is an improvement in the set of physical characteristics of the olives with the treatment that provides amino acids and extra potassium based on amni acids. We analyzed the quality of the olive oil obtained from the production of each treatment by measuring the fatty acids, tocopherols and polyphenols contents. We also carried out an organoleptic tasting analysis following the rules of the International Olive Committee (IOC). We observed an improvement with regard to the rest of treatments in the pomological parameters of the olives when applying the potassium and amino acid biostimulant, while the quality of the oils was not affected by the type of fertilization applied in each treatment.
