There are many commercial substrates available in the market of vegetables nowadays. However, a growing pressure turned for sustainability in farming, promotes a line of utilization of waste with agricultural potential, such as the use of urban waste compost and tannery sludge, which, when available, can be used as sources of compost and alternative organic matter. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of tannery sludge associated with the urban waste compost in the substrate composition of sweet pepper seedlings, especially regarding emergence, development, and quality of seedlings. The experimental design was a randomized block design with six replications and eight treatments. The treatments consisted of mixtures of the residue of dehydrated tannery sludge and urban waste compost, varying in the proportions of 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 90% and 100% of each, as well as the use of a commercial substrate as a conventional treatment for the comparisons. Graphs were performed through linear regression analysis for the treatment of statistical data. The percentage of emergence, development, and quality of seedlings were evaluated 54 days after planting. The alternative substrates showed high potential in the production of seedlings, in which all the combinations used in the study were superior to the conventional treatment, except the germination, which did not present difference. The range for the use of tannery sludge in the preparation of substrates for sweet pepper seedlings is between 32.7 and 48.2% in a mixture with urban waste compost. The plants presented better quality with the use of 46.0% of tannery sludge and 54.0% of urban compost in the preparation of the substrate.

O aproveitamento de resíduos agroindustriais é pouco recorrente, embora seja viável economicamente e benéfico ao meio ambiente. Por sua vez, tais materiais apresentam elevadas porções de matéria orgânica e nutrientes, indicando alto potencial em utilização agrícola. Portanto, objetivou-se avaliar o desenvolvimento e qualidade de mudas de pimenta malagueta, cultivadas em seis diferentes substratos, contendo proporções de 0 a 90% de lodo de curtume em substrato comercial Bioplant®, além do substrato testemunha, o Provaso®. Aos 21 dias após a semeadura foi contabilizada a emergência das plântulas e, aos 42 dias, as características de desenvolvimento e qualidade de mudas. Para a maioria das variáveis analisadas, o lodo de curtume, nos substratos, promoveu um bom desenvolvimento das plântulas de pimenteira, apresentando desempenho semelhante ao Provaso®. Todavia, o aumento das porções de lodo, aplicadas acima de um nível ótimo, tem efeito negativo, sendo observado declínio nos parâmetros de crescimento e qualidade das plântulas. Além disso, observou-se que o Bioplant® necessita de suplementação mineral para atender as necessidades iniciais das plântulas, sendo essa basicamente sustentada pelo lodo de curtume adicionado a mistura do substrato. Por fim, o aproveitamento deste resíduo, como complemento ao substrato comercial Bioplant®, para produção de mudas de pimenta, mostrou-se viável agronomicamente, promovendo uma boa qualidade e satisfatório desenvolvimento das mudas.

Tannery sludge has been highlighted for substrate use in the propagation of seedlings, combining the solution of an environmental problem with its potential for agronomic use. However, when a new fertilizer component enters into the composition of a substrate, it remains to be seen whether other characteristics are affected. Thus, the objective of this work was to verify whether supplementary foliar fertilization is necessary when using a substrate with tannery sludge in the propagation of conilon coffee seedlings of the variety "Vitótria Incaper-8142". A 2 ˟ 13 factorial arrangement was used, the first factor being the presence or absence of conventional leaf fertilization, and the second factor being the 13 coffee conilon Vitoria-Incaper 8142 genotypes arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The genotypes V7 and V9 presented leaves of reduced size, leading to a smaller leaf area, which coincided with a lower accumulation of aerial and total dry matter mass. Higher flavonoid indexes were found in the genotypes V1, V2, V6, and V13, indicating a higher sensitivity of these materials to the components present in the tannery sludge. In general, fertilization provided better initial development as well as a better seedling quality index.
