Foliar colleters in Anacardiaceae: first report for the family

Abstract: Colleters are secretory structures widely distributed in eudicots and with taxonomic value in many families. Although glandular trichomes have been described in some Anacardiaceae species, the chemical characterization of their secretions is scarce and to date there are no reports on colleters. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the distribution and structure of colleters on the vegetative buds of Anacardium humile A.St.-Hil., Lithraea molleoides (Vell.) Engl., Spondias dulcis… Show more

“…Secretory structures are involved in the production of different substances, both in the vegetative and reproductive organs of plants. In flowers and inflorescences, these include such structures as idioblasts, glandular trichomes (Leite et al, 2018), colleters (Lacchia et al, 2016), laticifers (Marinho et al, 2018), osmophores, and floral and extra-floral nectaries (De Souza et al, 2005). Trichomes are classified into glandular and non-glandular trichomes.…”

“…The structural and histochemical organisation of colleters in different plant families has been frequently described (see Lacchia et al 2016). However, in general, colleter biology remains poorly understood and studies addressing the attributes of colleter functioning and their association with the environment are scarce.…”

“…Colleters are widely distributed on young vegetative and reproductive organs in plants and have been reported in ferns (Oliveira et al 2017), monocots (Leitão & Cortelazzo 2008;Mayer et al 2011;Cardoso-Gustavson et al 2014) and in sixty-five eudicots families (Thomas 1991;Muravnik et al 2014) such as Apocynaceae, Gentianaceae, Rubiaceae, (Thomas 1991;Renobales et al 2001;APG 2009;Lopes-Mattos et al 2015;Tresmondi et al 2015). Anacardiaceae (Lacchia et al 2016), Aquifoliaceae (González & Tarragó 2009), Euphorbiaceae (Machado et al 2015;Vitarelli et al 2015), Fabaceae (Barros & Teixeira 2016), Lecythidaceae (Paiva 2012), Moraceae (Machado et al 2013), Rutaceae (Macêdo et al 2016), Rhizophoraceae (Sheue et al 2012) and Myrtaceae (Silva et al 2012).…”
