Foliar Application of 24-Epibrassinolide Improved Salt Stress Tolerance of Perennial Ryegrass

Abstract: Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is a widely used turfgrass. In this study, the effect of exogenously applied 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) on salt stress tolerance of perennial ryegrass was investigated. The results indicated that pretreatment with four concentrations of EBR (0, 0.1, 10, 1000 nM) improved salt tolerance of perennial ryegrass. Exogenous EBR treatment decreased electrolyte leakage (EL), malondialdehyde (MDA), and H2O2 Show more

“…When exogenous BL was applied to the apple leaves, Na + content decreased with increased K + content, and thus the leaf Na + /K + ratio decreased ( Figure 5). This condition is consistent with the findings of Sun et al (2015b) in which 10 nM BL treatment reduced leaf Na + /K + and increased K + content in perennial ryegrass under salt stress. However, in the roots, exogenous BL notably increased K + content.…”

“…Additionally, application of exogenous polyamines such as spermidine could improve salt stress tolerance in Kentucky bluegrass and zoysiagrass [25,31]. Some hormones such as epibrassinolide, salicylic acid and glycinebetaine could enhance the salt tolerance of weeping alkaligrass (Puccinellia distans) tall fescue, perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass [38][39][40][41][42]. Ethylene is a negative regulating hormone in the plant stress response pathway, and its suppression can protect perennial ryegrass against salt stress [43].…”

“…Brassinosteroids (BRs) belong to a class of polyhydroxylated steroid phytohormones that are implicated in the resistance to a broad spectrum of environmental cues such as heavy metals, drought, pesticides and salinity 18 – 20 , Exogenous application of the natural BR, 24-epibrassinolide (EBR), has enhanced growth, pigment constituents, photosynthetic attributes, osmolytes and antioxidant enzyme activity in crop plants under abiotic stresses 20 – 23 . Foliar application of EBR to plants controls a range of biochemical and physiological responses to salt stress 24 , 25 .…”
