Folded tandem ion accelerator facility at trombay

Abstract: The folded tandem ion accelerator (FOTIA) project at BARC has been commissioned. The analysed carbon beams of 40 nA(3 · ) and 25 nA(4 · ), at terminal voltage of 2.5 MV with N¾ · CO¾ as insulating gas, were obtained. The beams were characterized by performing the Rutherford back scattering (RBS) on gold, tin and iron targets. The beam energy of 12.5 MeV for ½¾ C · was consistent with the terminal voltage of 2.5 MV. The N¾ · CO¾ mixture is being replaced by SF gas in order to achieve 6 MV on the terminal. In thi… Show more

“…The energy calibration of BaF 2 detectors in the γ -ray energy range up to 6.13 MeV was done using 137 Cs, 60 Co, 241 Am- 9 Be and 238 Pu-13 C radioactive sources. For higher γ -ray energies up to ∼21 MeV, the 27 Al(p,γ ) and 11 B(p,γ ) reactions feeding the ground and excited states of the composite nuclei were measured using proton beams (E p ∼ 3.6-5.0 MeV) from the FOTIA accelerator at Mumbai [25]. The gain variation of the detectors was monitored periodically with the radioactive sources and was found to be within ±0.8% over the period of experimental measurements.…”

“…Biological effects of heavy charged particles on humans play an important role in two different scientific fields; in radiation therapy using protons and heavier ions and in space research for understanding effects on space travelers from galactic cosmic radiation [1]. In addition, the low energy heavy ion accelerators have an important role in basic and applied sciences [2]. Proton being the easiest light ion to accelerate and achieve desired beam profile, has been pursued as a popular particulate radiation for therapeutic applications.…”

“…An indigenously built folded tandem ion accelerator (FOTIA) facility [1][2][3] has recently been commissioned at BARC. It involved designing, fabrication, testing, installation and commissioning of a 6 MV folded tandem ion accelerator, by utilizing some of the components like the pressure tank, the storage tank, the equipotential rings, the high voltage dome and the accelerator room of the old 5.5 MV Van-de-Graaff accelerator at the Nuclear Physics Division, BARC.…”
