Folate in der Depressionsbehandlung

Abstract: Depression is an important and often recurrent illness. An initial antidepressant trial is effective at achieving remission for about 30 % of patients when prescribed as monotherapy, with the majority of patients returning as partial or non-responders. Suboptimal serum and red blood cell folate levels have been associated with a poorer response to antidepressant therapy, a greater severity of symptoms, later onset of clinical improvement, and overall treatment resistance. This article reviews the evidence for … Show more

“… 7 , 8 In fact, it has been ascertained that the administration of folate (just by way of example) can reduce the depressive syndrome or enhance the pharmacological action exerted by other antidepressants. 9 , 10 On the other hand, the oral administration of SAMe may involve a potential risk of increased blood homocysteine level, 11 as homocysteine may detract folate and vitamin B12 from the biochemical pathway of endogenous synthesis of SAMe, thus reducing the temporal antidepressive effects of the latter. It is also well known that oral administration of betaine – a methyl donor participating exclusively in the homocysteine cycle – causes both homocysteine reduction and increased blood SAMe level.…”
