Folate Deficiency in Chicks Fed Diets Containing Practical Ingredients

Abstract: Development of folate deficiency was evaluated in young chicks fed diets containing corn and soybean meal as major constituents. Folic acid deficiency, as indicated by retarded growth and feed efficiency, could be produced in 18-day-old chicks. Chicks fed the basal diet had increased growth when given supplements of either folic acid, choline Cl, or DL-methionine, but not vitamin B12. Relative liver size (grams per 100 g of body weight) was reduced by a methionine or methionine plus choline supplement in two e… Show more

“…The results of Experiments 1 and 2 extend those of earlier experiments (Marvel et al, 1944;Quillin et al, 1961;Pesti et al, 1991) that the growth of chicks fed diets based primarily on practical ingredients may be limited by some aspect of labile methyl group metabolism. The growth and tissue folic acid status of chicks are dependent not only on dietary folic acid, but also on dietary methionine and choline (Ryu et al, 1995, unpublished data).…”

“…Tilman & Pesti (1986) não conseguiram reproduzir, em condições experimentais semelhantes, os resultados obtidos por Miles et al (1983). Em outro experimento, Pesti et al (1991) controlaram, além da vitamina B12, o ácido fólico, suplementando a ração basal com 2 ppm de ácido fólico e, desta forma, encontraram respostas.…”

“…Folic acid is necessary for maintaining a normal growth rate and acceptable FCR in broiler chickens, as well as a greater egg weight and higher hatchability in egg-type birds [ 124 , 125 ]. The egg weight and egg mass in laying hens aged 24 wk can be improved by adding 4 mg folic acid/kg of diet for 8 wk [ 126 ].…”
