The aging of the world’s population and the growth in the number of people with chronic diseases have increased expenses with medical care. Thus, the use of technological solutions has been widely adopted in the medical field to improve the patients’ health. In this context, approaches based on Cloud Computing have been used to store and process the information generated in these solutions. However, using Cloud can create delays that are intolerable for medical applications. Thus, the Fog Computing paradigm emerged as an alternative to overcome this problem, bringing computation and storage closer to the data sources. However, managing medical data stored in Fog is still a challenge. Moreover, characteristics of availability, performance, interoperability, and privacy need to be considered in approaches that aim to explore this problem. So, this article shows a software architecture based on Fog Computing and designed to facilitate the management of medical records. This architecture uses Blockchain concepts to provide the necessary privacy features and to allow Fog Nodes to carry out the authorization process in a distributed way. Finally, this paper describes a case study that evaluates the performance, privacy, and interoperability requirements of the proposed architecture in a home-centered healthcare scenario.

Summary In this contribution, we define the concept of transferring intelligence from the cloud to the edge of the network and highlight its importance in modern IoT architectures. It leads to edge‐enabled IoT solutions, where intelligence is distributed to the end devices, ie, edge of the network. The IoT gateway is a middle‐ware between devices and cloud and facilitates computations and communication. We have encountered a research gap and decided to propose our solution on creating an edge‐enabled IoT gateway and evaluating its rating by functionality. In the beginning, we describe the general architecture where we demonstrate the location of the edge‐enabled IoT gateway in edge‐enabled solution. Then, we discuss a selection of major criteria, which could be implemented to any edge‐enabled solution. In the end, we evaluate our proposed edge‐enabled IoT gateway and also compare several scientific works focused on IoT gateway design according to our criteria.

After conducting a detailed survey among the villagers of Pallissery and Karukutty, it was observed that in most of the villages the native people have to travel long distances for their basic health needs. Also most of the villagers lack knowledge regarding live health updates. At times, these problems have even resulted in death of many people including pregnant women and children. The objective of our research is to propose an integrated and easy to use Medical Kiosk that can be installed at various locations in rural areas. The Kiosk will provide an integrated environment for all medical related activities and would perform numerous functions like sending notifications regarding medical camps, mobile medical help, important dates for vaccinations, child care, insurance policies and provide other live medical updates to the villagers. It would also support the basic facilities for measurement of body parameters like height, weight, BMI, blood pressure, and heartbeat and also facilitate live consultation facilities with specialized doctors through video and voice chats.
